The $108 million award by a Texas jury against the Monsanto Company to the family of a chemical worker who died of leukemia (news story, Dec. 13) points up one of the strangest anomalies in today's liability crisis: The workers' compensation system, originally intended to replace tort liability for on-the-job injuries, gives plaintiffs two bites at the compensation apple.
